Craft Fail...

I saw this website, called Craft Fail, on Steven and Chris and honestly, it's hilarious. I have a few items I could add to the postings indeed.

I love that there are "supposed to look like" photos, stories about the craft endeavor and then after photos. This one made me laugh out loud:

When reader Jennifer saw these delicious cookies she knew she had to make some.
She’s an activity director at a home for seniors and thought they would love a special treat.
Unfortunately, the grocery store was out of candy corn,
and she thought that perhaps M&M's would be a fine substitute.
No problem. Drop a few M&M’s where the feathers would be,
add a little frosting, glop on a little beak….

Do you think the seniors cared if their turkeys had cobbled feathers?
Naw, they probably enjoyed the cobbled goggle.

Funny, right? Enjoy!

DIY Milk Glass

I like this DIY for making Milk Glass vessels from here. But if you use acrylic/latex paint, as suggested, you can't add water (it'll dissolve the paint) so no fresh flowers. Hmph.

Someone in the comments suggested using enamel or paint made for dishes instead. Done and done.

Just because it's pretty...

The original website for these lightbulb vases seems defunct...I found it on Pinterest, here.

P.S. Happy New Year :)

Homemade glitter

UPDATE: This was, ehh, ok. Worked way better as a method for making coloured sugar than glitter.

Salt + food colouring + an oven = homemade glitter.

Good for Christmas decorations and cards. Maybe one could do the same thing to make glitter sugar for Christmas cookies?! I love anything preservative free.

Recycled Book Page Bird Ornament

This recycled book page bird ornament would be pretty on a card, as a gift tag, on the christmas tree or even as a fridge magnet. I would only love it more if it was fashioned out of pages from an old dictionary. From here.

No Sew Felt Wine Bags

Wouldn't you be happy to receive one of these no-sew felt wine bags (complete with wine, perhaps!)?From here.

P.S. It's only 4 months until Christmas...

Check Your Pockets - Laundry Room Sign

Perhaps this belongs by the hamper instead of the laundry room? I could have used one after washing and drying the following (not all at the same time): a tube of chapstick (this could have been a disaster but wasn't, it melted but the lid contained everything), felt marker (disaster - coloured the whole dryer purple), requisition form from the doctor (salvaged), money, keys, etc. etc...

From here.

Plumbing Pipe Candlesticks

If you like the industrial look you just might like these plumbing pipe candlesticks! There's a informative how to video with all the technical names for plumbing parts you can swing out so they'll think you're the cutest & plumber-butt-free plumber in the hardware store!

They spray paint the candlesticks in the video...but I kind of like the gritty looking hardware as it is. Spray painting it gold looks kinda King Midas Halloweenie (which could come in useful in a few months). I'm thinking that another colour (hot pink/white/glossy black, etc) may look more modern.

Pez Dispense Wall Art

Ok - the truth is...I'm not sure how I feel about this craft...I like the idea of spray painting Pez dispensers and hanging them on the wall but eyes without pupils freak me out! Maybe there are other toys/things that could be sprayed and mounted instead (?)... Or maybe it's the beige/white that's throwing me off. Maybe they'd be more my style if they were a punchy hot pink/acid green? I don't think art should blend in to the rest of my decor. It's still a cool idea though! From here.

Chair Gift

I love this idea. A small chair was recovered in plain white canvas and drawn upon with fabric markers as a gift for a child's 1st birthday. From here.

You could take this idea and instead of a chair do up a canvas, blanket, pillowcase, or poster paper (and then have it framed)...The chair is a cool idea but the most labour intensive. Keep in mind that anything that will be used (ie. dirtied) may need to be cleaned...but there's fabric sealers and art supplies for practically anything these days.

Ok...now here's a thought, this would be great gift from a child to a parent. Yes, supervision and help would be required...but I want one in ottoman form for our living room! So, I think I'd have to replace gift with "project" in my case...but that's ok.

Summer Wreath

I like wreaths on the front door. They are fun, colourful, friendly and actually easy to make. Here's one that is not too fussy and is personalized. We (still) have the ugliest door numbers on our house. I was thinking I could replace the initial with our house number. Why not?

Play Kitchen - Made by a Dad

I love blogs by guys (well, some of them anyways)...here's one of them.

I like this play kitchen. I don't know what the budget may have been but since this guy's subheading is:

"Ramblings of a bald man and his mod pad. And stuff. And getting it on the cheep. And sometimes maybe ladies. Who knows?"

I'm guessing it didn't cost a mint. Just some creativity and time.

This quote from the blog is hilarious: "Claire's pretty into it. Not really in the traditional way I guess, but more in the "Let's-rip-off-the-sink-and-drop-food-down-the-hole-and-retrieve-it-from-the-cabinet" sort of way. Sometimes she puts her fancy lady attire in the kitchen. I'd like she'll still be doing the same thing in about 25 years."

Soap Action Figures

I came across this craft and thought...my husband would think this is SO cool!!

I think this is a good craft that dads and kids can do together. Not that it would  mean less work for you (set it up for your husband to tackle, collect all tools and ingredients, print out instructions, possibly simplify instructions, probably clean up afterwards, provide a snack, etc., etc.) but I think it could make a really cute set of photos and some priceless memories. From here.

3D Wall Displays

This would be cute for a children's room (as noted in the tutorial, a boys room could have planes/whatever) or even for a kitchen (elaborate felt hens and chicks?)...

From here.

Repurpose a glass jar - a simple gift.

I love this idea. What a nice way to make use of a glass jar, a hair pin and some flowers.

Flowers from plastic bottles

The sky's the limit as to what you can make/do by recycling plastic bottles. Save the recycling centre/landfill some work and turn some of yours into something beautiful and inspiring...

Pop bottle flowers (+ instructions) from here.

...

You could use them to make a wreath - inspiration from here.
